Tatsuya Suou is a senior student attending Seven Sisters High School in Sumaru City, Japan. He's the younger brother of Katsuya Suou, a police detective.
In his childhood, Tatsuya was a very confident and outgoing person; he cared deeply for his friends and would do anything in his power to help those closest to him.
This all changed when he was about 8 years old; his father, a police officer, was thrown in jail under false allegations. With their family disgraced by his father's arrest, Tatsuya fell into depression; he became introverted and rebellious.
The Tatsuya of today is a stark contrast to his youth; he is standoffish and aloof. Often, he will choose to simply ignore the people talking to him. He'll often spend more time working on his motorcycle than he will talking to people. His nonchalant and apathetic personality has, much to his chagrin, made him incredibly popular around Sevens as a "bad boy," with multiple students (both female and male, Lisa Silverman included) having a crush on him.
Tatsuya does not remember much from his childhood, before his father's arrest. All he has to remember days long gone is an engraved Zippo lighter he is often seen flicking open and closed; it's a habit of his. It is a memento of his best friend, Jun Kurosu.
Though perhaps it is for the best Tatsuya does not remember his past. In reality, Tatsuya has fallen into a deep depression over a traumatic experience at the Alaya Shrine in Rengedai. As a child, Tatsuya had made a group of friends with other children visiting the Shrine, called the Masked Circle; the name stems from the fact they would always meet while wearing their Phoenix Ranger Featherman masks. There, he met a girl who who was a few years old than him, named Maya Amano. The group loved her, seeing her as their big sister.
One day, much to the dismay of the children, Maya announced she was moving away. In an effort to keep her from leaving them, Lisa and Eikichi decided to lock her in the Alaya Shrine and keep her there overnight, so she couldn't leave with her parents. Tatsuya, having been vehemently against this idea, was placed as guard to ensure she couldn't escape.
That night, a deranged psychopath named Tatsuya Sudou, stabbed the young boy before setting the entire shrine on fire. In a fit of rage and hatred toward the man, the young Tatsuya awakened to his Persona and burnt out Sudou's eye. Unbeknownst to Tatsuya, Maya was able to safely escape the shrine; he blamed himself for her 'death' for many years.
The Masked Circle discarded their masks in Mt Iwato, stopped speaking to each other, and repressed all memories of the incident until they ultimately forgot about it entirely. This is the main reason for Tatsuya's sudden and drastic change in personality.
